Lovers Leap Climbs, Strawberry, CA

Surrealistic Pillar & Corrugation Corner

In the summer of 1999 Mike Heath, Hugo Velez & Brian Biega spent a warm summers day climbing the Lower and Main Wall at Lovers Leap. This is a very nice climbing area just over the hill from Lake Tahoe's South Shore. The weather was great and the climbing was awesome. Below are some pictures of our days adventure.

Surrealistic Pillar 5.7

Below left: Brian looks down from a ledge and Mike says "What's up, Larry?"
Left: Mike cruising up pitch 2, the crux of the route. This pitch moves up and around the Arete for a very airy exposed feeling for all.

Below: Hugo takes up the slack as Mike races up the climb below.
What a climb! Afterwards they hiked up the hill to the next one just a few minutes away.
Corrugation Corner 5.7

Corrugation Corner at 5.7 is one of the best climbs at Lovers Leap. There is a lot of exposure as the first pitch starts almost two hundred feet up the Main Wall. You approach this climb by hiking up from below to the Main Ledge which starts to the right side of the Main Wall. Once you reach the ledge you walk east towards the route. Corrugation Corner is located just to the right of the famous Travelers Buttress one of the Fifty Classic Climbs of the United States. The main ledge takes you to the top of the first pitch of Travelers Buttress or the start of Corrugation Corner.

With a nice snack before starting up the climb the team watch other climbers on the crux 2nd pitch of Travelers Buttress. What an incredible view of the East Wall from this location as well.

Mike looking up the chimney at the start of the 4th pitch! Oh SHIT!

Left: Hugo just above the crux traverse, pitch 4.
Left: Hugo busting some campus moves through the upper overhang at the top of the corner.

Below: Mike moves past the crux traverse in style and loving it!

Below: Mike hangs his feet over the edge yet once again after another great climb!
